Awarding A Million Dollar Grant
Objective: To help students understand group process by participating in a group decision. Designed to accompany lectures on group process.
Situation: You are empowered to grant an award of $1 million to one and only one of the following person. The money may not be divided among the candidates, nor may it be personally kept by the grantee. The following profiles are the only information you have about the candidates. Rank order your choices for the award from 1 (most deserving) to 10 (least deserving). After you have made your personal ranking, meet with your group members and agree on a group ranking. the group must reach a consensus.
Angela is a 52-year-old nun who teaches in a depressed area. She says she will use the money to clothe, feed, house, and educate the poor.
Jamie is a 7-year-old boy who has been suffering from bone cancer for four years. Jamie will die unless new and expensive live-saving procedures are used. In addition, Jamie’s family would like to use the money to provide Jamie with some of the joys of childhood he has missed—including a trip to Disneyland. They say they will donate the remaining money to Cancer Research Fund.
John is a 45-year-old director of the School for Human Resources, and organization that educates muscle-diseased youths. He needs the money to improve the school’s facilities, increase its educational offering, and hire a full-time psychologist for the students.
Jim is a 60-year-old union president and founder of the Needy Children’s Scholarship Fund. He says that he would use the money to send disadvantaged minority youths to college.
Simone is a 40-year-old prosperous real estate developer. She says she will use the money to become a partner in real estate deals that will return 10 times the initial investment in five years. With half of the profit she expects to build a modern housing project for the elderly.
Alex is a 37-year-old paraplegic who received his injuries during the Vietnam War. Although his handicap qualifies him for disability benefits, Alex refuses to accept them. Alex will use the money to help other disabled veterans lead a more normal life.
Mickey is an orphaned college student majoring in sociology. He hopes to use his skills to understand the problems in underdeveloped countries. He supports himself and his two younger sisters by taking odd jobs. Mickey would use the money to take care of his family and pay for his education.
Mike is a 23 year old gay male. He has been diagnosed with AIDS. He doesn’t have medical insurance and he has used all of his financial resources. His parents sold their home to keep him supplied with the drugs he need to stay alive but the money is quickly running out. He will use the money to pay for his medical expenses with any remaining going AIDS research.
Stacee is a 20-year-old struggling artist who refuses to use her family’s money to further her career. She says she would use the award to lease or build space and purchase the materials that would enable her and a group of others aspiring artists to have the security they need to develop and show their work.
Karen is a six-month-old mentally retarded child whose parents were killed in an automobile accident. Her aunt and uncle have adopted her. The money would be used to raise her and supply for her special needs. Any remainder would be put in a trust and awarded to her on her 21st birthday.
